Community litter picks are part of the Great British Spring Clean 2019

Central Bedfordshire Council is encouraging town and parish councils to organise litter picks as part of the Great British Spring Clean 2019. This is the third time that the national campaign has run, and this year it lasts for a month, running until 23rd April.

Organisers, Keep Britain Tidy, expect that up to half a million people will be taking action to clean up streets, parks and beaches across the country.

It has also been appealing to schools across the nation to get involved in litter picking, as part of the Great Big School Clean.

Tracey Harris, Assistant Director of Environmental Services at Central Bedfordshire Council, said:

“This year there is a particular emphasis on collecting and safely disposing of single-use plastic, recycling as much as possible.

“Plastic is an issue that is increasingly in the public eye, following TV programmes such as the Blue Planet that have highlighted the impact that plastic can have on the environment.”

Litter picking event is planned for Cranfield

So far, 20 events have taken place across Central Bedfordshire. The council is supporting the events, supplying bags and litter picking equipment, and co-ordinating the collection of bags of waste.

Volunteers are being asked to separate the litter they pick into three bags. These bags separate plastic bottles and aluminium cans from the rest of the rubbish.

There are eight more confirmed events still to take place, including Aspley Guise and Cranfield

There are other events in Central Bedfordshire also in the process of being organised. You can get details of all the litter picks at www.keepbritaintidy.org

Tracey said:

“I would like to thank all those across Central Bedfordshire who are giving their time to get involved and supported this national project. This is an excellent example of volunteer effort and community action.”

Great British Spring Clean volunteers can be nominated for Central Bedfordshire Council’s fifth annual Cheering Volunteering Awards.

This award is a chance to say thank you to those who give up their time to help others. There are six award categories.

The celebration evening takes place at the Grove Theatre, Dunstable on Tuesday 4 June 2019.
