Still time to get finances sorted for the new academic year – but it can take six weeks to process an application

The Student Loans Company (SLC) says that students in England still have time to get their finances sorted for the 19/20 academic year.

The SLC is offering some top tips to students going through Clearing:

  • Watch SLC’s Clearing playlist
  • Have your National Insurance Number and UK Passport details to hand before you start your online application
  • Keep a note of the email address you use when applying for student finance and make sure you choose a password that you’ll remember

You’ll be able to check the progress of your application, update your details and check your payments from your online account.

There’s also a dedicated Clearing page with lots of useful information on Gov.UK at Student Finance

SLC‘s director of operations, Derek Ross, said:

“It is important that Students complete their finance applications as soon as possible to ensure that their first payments are received at the start of term. The sooner they submit their application the sooner we can get their student finance in place.

“Those students who have already applied for student finance but want to change their course, university or college should update their details on their online account at”

Students who have still to apply should do so as soon as possible as it can take six weeks to process an application. Student Finance England (SFE) will make an initial assessment so you have some money as close to the start of your course as possible.

The fastest way to apply is by registering for an online account and submitting an application at:

SFE is hosting a live Clearing and Adjustment Facebook Q&A from 2pm on 20 August 2019.

To help you sort out your student finance, SFE experts will also be available online Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm and Saturday 9am to 4pm to answer your questions on Twitter and Facebook
