Fill up your reusable water bottle on the go

Refill Bedford is encouraging the people of Bedford to choose to reuse by opting for a reusable water bottle and filling up on the go, rather than buying a single-use plastic bottle.

Refill is a nationwide scheme providing a network of points offering the public free tap water in the UK. The network comprises high street retailers, cafes, restaurants, other businesses, museums, and local authorities.

Refill Bedford said that in the UK, we make our way through 7.7 BILLION plastic water bottles every year and an estimated 700,000 plastic bottles are littered every single day.

Water UK, the trade association and Refill partners, said that this country’s drinking water is of the highest standard, among the best in the world. Adding that very strict standards apply to piped drinking water to protect public health.

Also, scientists have said reusables are perfectly safe to use, including over 125 experts from around the world. Cory Walker, community lead for Refill Bedford, said:

“As the public get back out and about, enjoying their summer holidays I hope they will choose to reuse and bring a water bottle with them as part.

“We have 28 places to refill here in Bedford, we can all join together to make a difference and reduce single use in our community and stay hydrated.”

Almost 30,000 Refill Stations across the UK

Coordinated by City to Sea, Refill works by connecting people looking for drinking water with of Refill Stations across the UK via a free location-based app.

Participating cafes, bars, restaurants, banks, galleries, museums and other businesses sign up to the app and put a sticker in their window. This lets passers-by know that they’re welcome to come in to fill up their bottle.

The app has been downloaded over 300,000 times and there are now almost 30,000 Refill Stations across the UK. In Bedford, consumers can refill at over 20 venues including Made In Bedford at Number 13, Harpur Centre and now at Provident House.

City to Sea is encouraging people to try and reduce the amount of plastic waste they create over the summer holidays by:

  • Carrying a reusable bottle or coffee cup when out and about
  • Downloading the FREE Refill app to find Refill stations for a free water refill or a #ContactlessCoffee
  • Supporting local businesses and celebrating the amazing, planet protecting businesses that ARE accepting reusables by showing them some love on social media and with your wallets
  • If you find a business that’s NOT accepting refills, share City to Sea’s #ContactlessCoffee campaign and the Refill water guidance to help them get back on board, tag them on social media & ask them to join the #RefillRevolution
