Urgent call for Bedfordshire organisations to deliver online activity sessions for those worst hit by lockdown Image by Prostock-studio AdobeStock_353967672

As the majority of sports and exercise activities have become impossible, the whole population has been affected, but not affected equally.

Research from Sport England into the impact of the pandemic on physical activity has revealed certain groups of people – specifically those in lower socio-economic groups; Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities; Disabled people and people with long-term health conditions – are being disproportionately affected.

Now, as the stricter measures of the 2021 lockdown restrict movement further, Sport England has called upon its network of Active Partnerships to connect funding to where it’s needed locally.

In Bedfordshire, Active Partnership team BEDS&LUTON has taken up the challenge to help its local communities.

Team BEDS&LUTON director Clare Fitzboydon said:

“Some of the people in these groups are those most at risk from Covid-19, and a lack of physical exercise and ability to increase their fitness can only make the threat worse.

“We are asking those who want to make a stand for their neighbours to answer our call to action. We need local charities, organisations or sport professionals to come forward to help deliver online activity sessions during the current lockdown.”

Sport England has set up a £20m fund of National Lottery money – the Tackling Inequalities Fund – which will be administered by the Active Partners, like team BEDS&LUTON to support projects that meet the needs of the target groups.

Clare Fitzboydon said:

“We’ve worked with a wide range of charities and community groups since the pandemic struck to help us keep people in Bedfordshire active at home.

“We want to support more organisations to do the same, even if sport or physical activity isn’t your main thing. If you have an idea and the ability to help keep our community healthy – we want to hear from you today.”
