your prescription might run out over Christmas

Will your repeat prescription last over the festive period?

Order your prescription well in advance to avoid running out during the festive holidays. This is the message from GPs in Bedfordshire and Luton to those who have repeat medication.

Clinical Chair of Bedfordshire Clinical Commissioning Group (BCCG) and a local GP, Dr Alvin Low, said:

“Don’t get caught out this Christmas – check your medication, and make sure there is enough to see you through the holidays. Surgeries will only be closed for a couple of days but this will avoid last minute panic and help to prevent long term health conditions from getting worse due to medication running out.

“By avoiding running out of your medicine you not only look after your own health, but you will also be helping the NHS. People with long-term health conditions can become so unwell that they end up in hospital just because they ran out of medication – something which everyone wants to avoid.

“Please also look out for older or frail neighbours or family members, and ask if they need help with getting their medicines – it’s better if they can avoid going out to collect medication in wintry weather, especially if there is ice or snow.”

Household medicine cabinet

It’s also a good idea to stock up your medicine cabinet so you have remedies to hand before the holidays start. Your local pharmacist can advise you on the contents.

Did you know that you can order repeat prescriptions via your GP’s website? It is much quicker and more convenient than telephoning a busy surgery or going there in person. It can also make or cancel appointments and view your own medical records.

If you are not already registered, you can find out more or ask for a registration form from your GP practice.

The BCCG website has a list of local pharmacy opening times for the Christmas and New Year holidays.

There are also lots of things that you can do to help yourself and your family to stay well this winter.
