Bedford Foodbank donates surplus pasta and sanitary products

It is now week five of a six-week pilot scheme for The Railway Food Collection – a partnership between Govia Thameslink and local food banks. So far, the scheme has been helping those in need in the Bedford and Brighton areas thanks to The Bedford Foodbank and The BMECP Food Bank.

Today (11 August 2020) the two joined forces to get essential items to those in need at Brighton.

The BMECP Food Bank was desperately in need of pasta and sanitary products and The Bedford Foodbank had surplus supply of both. So Bedford kindly donated 70 kilos of pasta and five boxes of sanitary products which have been transferred by train this morning via a Thameslink service.

The products arrived just in time for the usual #railwayfoodcollection day at Brighton station. Sarah Broughton, from The Bedford Foodbank, said:

“Due to the pandemic, we’ve seen an increasing demand for our service over the last five months. Thanks to generosity from the Bedford community, we’ve been able to feed 3,888 people from March through to July.

“We are in a fortunate position to have an abundance of certain items so it’s our pleasure to be able to help the BMECP Food Bank in Brighton today, with the long-distance donation only possible thanks to Govia Thameslink transporting the goods to Brighton station.”

Juliet Ssekitoleko, from the BMECP Food Bank said:

“Times are tough, unemployment is high and most BAME communities have been affected with this pandemic.

“The Donors and funders have been a great blessing to our BME community and we’re very grateful to The Bedford Foodbank for getting us these essential items this morning.”

Charlotte Scallon, Head of CSR at Govia Thameslink Railway, said:

“We have reached the penultimate week of our Railway Food Collection pilot scheme and are thrilled with the contributions so far.

“Railway staff and local communities in both Bedford and Brighton have been very generous and we’re pleased to now go the extra mile (or 119 to be exact) taking essential items from the Bedford Foodbank and delivering to those in need via The BMECP Food Bank in Brighton.”
