The Amplifon awards celebrate truly remarkable people and pets
Captain Sir Tom Moore, who raised almost £40million for the NHS Charities Together, is the Amplifon Awards for Brave Britons 2020 Coronavirus Champion.
Captain Sir Tom received the award during a virtual ceremony hosted by BBC 1 TV Breakfast presenter Rachel Burden. Speaking on his behalf his daughter, Hannah Ingram Moore, said:
“We are both so proud that he has been chosen as the Coronavirus Hero.
“Never in our wildest dreams de we think what would happen over the last six months when my husband challenged my father to walk 100 laps of our garden and raise £100 for charity to celebrate his 100th birthday. I challenged the family to make that £1,000 but after we set up a JustGiving page and sent out a low key press release, well, the rest is history.
“My father would like to thank everyone who nominated him and the judges for choosing him as the Coronavirus Hero.”
The Amplifon awards are in their fifth year and celebrate truly remarkable people and pets. They were set up in honour of Amplifon’s founder, Second World War hero Major Charles Holland.
Amplifon’s judges commented:
“Captain Sir Tom galvanised the nation by demonstrating a gutsy British spirit that he resurrected from his days as respected army officer in the Second World War.
“And the £40million his daily walks in April raised for the NHS was enhanced many times over by many people from across the UK who took inspiration from his efforts and took up similar challenges themselves.”
