Beds Fire Service’s month long recruitment drive
Throughout January Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service (BFRS) is running a recruitment campaign for Wholetime (also known as full-time) Firefighters. The recruitment period opens on 4 January and closes on 8 February 2019.
Station Commander Lorraine Moore, who is leading the recruitment drive, said:

“There’s a lot more to it than just fighting fires – you will work in your community to help protect the public and prevent emergencies from happening”.
“Wholetime Firefighters are based in Bedford, Kempston, Luton, Dunstable and Stopsley and are trained not only in firefighting and dealing with road traffic collisions but also specialist skills such as water rescue, animal rescue, working at height and dealing with hazardous materials.”
Applicants need to be fit and aged 18 or over
To be a Wholetime Firefighter you should live in Bedfordshire, or within 10 miles of its border, be fit, be aged 18 or over on employment, have three GCSEs Grades A-C in English, Maths and one other subject (or equivalent), be able to swim and have a full driving licence (with no pending issues) at pre-employment check stage.
“We are particularly keen to receive applications from women and Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic groups. Both these groups are under-represented within BFRS and we know they can bring a unique set of experiences and skills to the Service. This will assist us in communicating with and understanding our local communities”.
“We operate a 24 hour shift system with Firefighters being on duty for 24 hours followed by 72 hours off duty. This gives our firefighters the opportunity for a great work/life balance.”

The Service is looking for individuals who possess a range of personal qualities to work in the local communities, these include:

Successful candidates will be required to serve at any community fire station within the Bedfordshire area. Candidates will be required to gain Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) clearance and pass a Service Medical and Fitness test.
Starting Salary £22,908 per annum progressing to £23,862 per annum after initial training, up to a maximum of £30,533.

After this date the shortlisting process will take place and those selected will be invited to undertake the first stage of the selection process.
The recruitment process can be lengthy and the final, successful candidates will begin their fourteen weeks training course in September 2019.
