Bedford Borough: A6 southbound to be closed overnight for bridge repairs at Oakley

From Thursday 18 June 2020, Oakley Road Bridge will be closed 24/7 and the A6 southbound between the Clapham High Street junction and Bedford will be closed overnight for up to seven weeks to carry out vital bridge repairs.

This major piece of work has been in the planning for a long time, and after being damaged by a vehicle hitting it at high speed, the repair works are required to ensure the bridge is safe for the long-term future.

During these works, the bridge will not be able to support the weight of vehicles using it so it will need to be closed for the duration. A signed diversion route will be in place via Highfield Road. The footway over the bridge will remain open throughout the works.

A6 past Wilstead set to reopen in less than two weeks

Following major works which have seen the entire stretch of road dug up, the drainage system replaced, and the road rebuilt, the A6 past Wilstead is set to reopen on Monday 9 March.

This route south of Bedford had begun to collapse and become too dangerous for normal road use. To ensure the long-term future of this road, the Bedford Borough Council decided to invest in completely rebuilding it.

During the rebuild, it became clear that the existing pipe drainage system had not been fit for purpose and the ground had become saturated.

This meant that extra works were needed to strengthen the new road foundations. Over a kilometre of additional pipe was installed, and over 25,000 cubic metres of extra material was dug out and re-laid.

The A6 past Wilstead is currently being rebuilt. This stretch of road was originally built in the 1970s, but had become too dangerous for normal road use after its foundations had collapsed.

Extensive work on the project has already been completed including the removal of the existing road surface and kerbs along with a large section of the underlying concrete layer, and the start of the removal of the old road foundations.
