Bedford Hospital set to start trials for cautious release of visitor ban

A meeting also heard yesterday (Monday, 14 September 2020) that the hospital is on the brink of making gentle changes to visitor arrangement in maternity.

Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has been awarded £3m to improve urgent and emergency services at the Bedford Hospital site.

This funding means the Trust can now tend to its immediate priorities of extending the capacity within the waiting areas in the emergency department, improve children’s A&E and enhance the Same Day Emergency Care service.

​Abandoned Thameslink bikes restored for Bedford Hospital staff

Around 30 NHS key workers at Bedfordshire hospitals are now travelling to work on free bicycles, thanks to a scheme to renovate abandoned bikes. The scheme is being run by Thameslink, Luton Council and Sustrans, the charity promoting cycling and walking.

The aim was to help hospital staff get to and from work while maintaining social distancing and getting some valuable extra exercise. Fittingly the project has completed its first batch of bikes in June, National Bike Month.

Bedfordshire Police donates bikes to help doctors and nurses

Bedfordshire Police is donating 25 bicycles to doctors and nurses at Bedford Hospital to help them with transport issues during the coronavirus pandemic.

All the donated bikes have been recovered by police, and their owners could not be traced. They have been sent to local bike shop Flamme Rouge Cycles in Bromham Road, to ensure they are safe before being handed over, and which has been offering free bike services to all key workers during lockdown.

Adding that it is comforting to know that the staff is in the local community’s thoughts at this challenging period.

Hospital Trusts merge to form Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

From today, Wednesday 1 April 2020, the new Foundation Trust caring for a population of around 620,000 people in and around Bedfordshire has come into operation, following the merger of Bedford Hospital NHS Trust and the Luton and Dunstable University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is responsible for managing services at both Bedford and Luton with each individual hospital retaining its name and proud heritage.

The new integrated Trust will bring together a combined workforce of approximately 8,000 staff and will be the largest NHS employer in Bedfordshire.

Seven New Year’s Day babies at Bedford Hospital!

Bedford Hospital midwives were delighted to welcome the arrival of seven babies born on New Year’s Day 2020.

The first beautiful bundles of joy to arrive was Mila, a baby girl who was born at 00.04am on 1st January 2020, weighing 5lbs 4oz to parents Vicky and Peter.

Another precious bundle to arrive at 1.40pm was Ethan and baby boy weighing 8lbs 1oz to first time parents Charlotte and Phil.

All families are incredibly overjoyed with their new arrivals.

Bedford Hospital NHS Trust to receive cancer screening funding

The 78 trusts that will benefit from funding for new cancer testing and detection technology have been announced.
The new machines will improve screening and early diagnosis of cancer, and are part of the government’s commitment to ensure 55,000 more people survive cancer each year.

Last month the Prime Minister announced the extra £200 million in funding for new cancer screening equipment. 78 trusts will receive funding over the next 2 years to replace, refurbish and upgrade:

CT and MRI scanners – bringing in alternatives with lower radiation levels
Breast screening imaging and assessment equipment

Trusts welcome NHS funding announcement

Twenty hospitals across England are set to be upgraded, at a cost of £850 million. This includes £99.5 million for Luton & Dunstable University Hospital NHS FT.

This will provide a new block to provide critical and intensive care, as well as a delivery suite and operating theatres.
