Bedfordshire Police lights up Christmas for elderly patients in hospital

Officers and staff from across Bedfordshire Police have donated over 70 presents to elderly patients in Bedford Hospital and the Luton and Dunstable Hospital.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic officers are unable to visit the patients on the hospital wards to personally deliver their presents.

PCSOs from the Luton Community team will safely handover presents to ward staff outside of the hospital, who will deliver the presents to patients over the Christmas period once they have been quarantined for infection control purposes.

Many of the patients will be spending Christmas Day receiving treatment, and sadly without any visitors. In some instances, this will be the only Christmas present they receive.

Bedford Hospital awarded £3m to improve urgent and emergency care

Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has been awarded £3m to improve urgent and emergency services at the Bedford Hospital site.

This funding means the Trust can now tend to its immediate priorities of extending the capacity within the waiting areas in the emergency department, improve children’s A&E and enhance the Same Day Emergency Care service.

Study says broccoli and tea play “significant roles” in cancer prevention

Bedfordshire Hospitals Consultant, Professor Robert Thomas has co-led a national scientific study that says eating broccoli and drinking tea can prevent cancer.

Two separate studies were presented (virtually) at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Conference on 31 May 2020.

The studies analysed one of the largest data sets in the world with over 155,000 people followed for a period of 12 years.

The first study definitively confirmed regularly eating broccoli reduces cancer risk by approximately 5%. The second study showed regularly drinking tea reduced the risk of prostate cancer.
