Injury Prevention Week: Is your child road safety aware?

In a survey by YouGov, commissioned for Injury Prevention Week (17-21 August) almost two-thirds of parents did not think their children had a good understanding of the dangers or concentrate near roads.


The Highway Code states that children should not be allowed out alone until they can understand and use the Green Cross Code properly. So it is particularly important for those children who may be walking to school without a parent or guardian for the first time this term.

Call for motorists to help children stay safe near schools

Campaigning schoolchildren included Wootton-based Holywell School students

Bedford Borough Liberal Democrats have issued a plea for motorists to help children stay safe, following a debate on children’s road safety at a Council meeting last week.

At the Children’s Services Overview and Scrutiny Committee (OSC), councillors heard from children from Wootton. They have been campaigning on the issue of road safety in their community.

The schoolchildren raised a wide range of issues, and in response Council representatives set out work that will take place to address them. This will include the appointment of a new school crossing patrol, assessing bus stops and crossings in the area and reviewing road safety information campaigns for young people.

Transport Secretary refuses to return a penny of speed camera fines to Bedford Borough

The Government has rejected a joint call from Mayor Dave Hodgson and a number of Parish Council Chairs to stop hoarding all of the fines raised by local average speed cameras and instead reinvest the cost of their installation in further road safety measures.

Bedford Borough Council became the first place in the in the country to install the cameras on local roads in 2012, after Mayor Dave recognised the breadth of public concern about speeding traffic. They are incredibly effective at bringing down speeds and hence have been popular where they have been installed, and a large waiting list of sites has grown as more communities have called for them.
