Bedford Borough Council: Beware of coronavirus scams

Bedford Borough Council’s Trading Standards team is warning people to remain vigilant. This follows reports of coronavirus-related scams as criminals try to exploit people’s fears.

In Bedfordshire, the sale of counterfeit goods such as hand sanitiser and fake coronavirus tests has been reported. Currently, there are no legitimate coronavirus tests for sale.

Look out for people selling other counterfeit goods such as sanitisers, face masks, or coronavirus swabbing kits online or door-to-door.

Trading Standards says that these products are likely to be ineffective and could be unsafe to use.

Be vigilant to COVID-19 door to door scams

Bedfordshire Police is warning that opportunist thieves may see this period as a time to carry out distraction burglaries, as vulnerable adults and elderly people are spending more time at home following isolation guidance.

It is asking for the public’s support, by encouraging you to remind your elderly and vulnerable relatives, friends and neighbours to take extra care when answering the door to people they do not know.

It added that it has been made aware of people knocking on doors, claiming to be selling vaccines and supplies for COVID-19, such items do not exist.

HMRC warns of landline scams threatening households

Households with a landline number should be vigilant of phone calls from fraudsters pretending to be the tax authority, warns HM Revenue and Customs.

As HMRC has increasingly cracked down on email and SMS phishing, a rising number of criminals are turning to the traditional method of cold-calling publicly available phone numbers to steal money from taxpayers. Often these calls are to landline numbers.
