East West Rail is coming to and through Bedford

It has been announced that East West Rail will be stopping at Bedford Midland station. This will connect the town directly to Cambridge and Oxford.

This ‘Central Section’ builds on the ‘Western Section’, connecting Oxford and Bicester with services through to Bedford.

Bedford Borough Council (BBC) said that this confirmation is excellent news for Bedford residents. It added thsat the increased connectivity will bring more opportunities to travel for work and leisure, as well as supporting economic growth and prosperity, attracting businesses and jobs.

BBC added that recent modelling in its Rail Strategy says that East West Rail is forecast to bring over £20million of additional economic activity to the Borough.

Work to improve accessibility at Bedford railway station

Network Rail begins work to improve accessibility at Bedford railway station

Network Rail is carrying out vital work to refurbish the lifts at Bedford railway station to give those with additional access needs a more reliable route to the platforms.

The work begins on Monday, 1 October and will be completed on Monday, 3 December. Due to the nature of the work, this means that there will be no step-free access to the station during this time.

Taxis may be used to replace part of the passenger’s journey, passengers can organise assistance through contacting their train operator.

Thameslink extends compensation scheme to non-season ticket holders

Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) has extended the additional industry compensation scheme. The compensation is for passengers affected by disruption caused by new timetable introduced in May.

Regular travellers without a season ticket could now be eligible for compensation. These passengers must have made at least three days’ return travel in any week in the period 20 May to 28 July. Travel most also have been from the most affected stations.
