Independent panel scrutinises Bedfordshire Police’s use of force

An independent panel set up to scrutinise Bedfordshire Police’s use of force has given officers the green light in its latest series of reviews.

Bedfordshire’s independent use of force scrutiny panel reviewed four videos which the panel randomly selected of officers using force to detain suspects.

The independent panel rated each of the four videos ‘green’ at Thursday’s meeting, the highest available mark on the ‘traffic light’ system used to grade the footage.

Bedfordshire Police opens up Use of Force for public scrutiny

Bedfordshire Police is inviting independent members of the public to hold it to account on its use of force.

A new Use of Force Scrutiny Panel is being launched in order to help the force improve its use of and approach to policing in the event of arrest, or in any number of scenarios including when utilising stop and search powers.

For the purposes of recording, ‘use of force’ is defined in police terms as everything from using handcuffs and unarmed detention skills, to the use of police dogs, batons, Taser and firearms.

Latest use of force statistics show that the force submitted 1,045 records of use of force between October and December 2019.
