According to the Park Nicollet Melrose Center, over 50% of teen girls use unhealthy weight control behaviours e.g., skipping meals, fasting, smoking, vomiting, and taking laxatives.
To top it all off, the uncertainty due to the pandemic has caused girls to feel more anxious than ever before.
So, Jasmine Mbye, director of The Like Me CIC, is inviting teen girls & their female guardians to The Girls Like Me Conference on 9 October 2021 at Marsh Farm Futures House from 1pm-5pm.
It is a hybrid event, so anyone who can’t attend in-person, can attend virtually. The conference’s aim is to enlighten girls on the power & the pitfalls of our Digital Generation.
Annually, The Girls Like Me Conference is about restoring self-esteem & is inspired by The International Day of The Girl which takes place on the 11th October each year.
Jasmine struggled with a lack of self-worth during her teen years & had the chance to overcome it. She said:
“You see I remember feeling hurt, alone and questioning my value. I want every girl to know that she’s not alone, she can feel good about herself and that she’s valuable.”
The event includes interactive activities including a digital quiz and a self-defense workshop, which will be led by Hasina Rahman – who specialises in various sports including Muay Thai, self-defense, Tai Chi and Mixed Martial Arts.
Guest speakers will share their story to help girls unshackle themselves.
The speaker line-up also includes:
- Certified counsellor Gehad Mursi
- Author & educational speaker Ayo Awotona
- CEO & interior designer Sabrina Durant (whose topic of presentation is ‘A Broken Girl with A Big Dream’)
- Social media content creator Aoife McMorrow
- Author & business director and mayor of Houghton Regis, Clare Coplestone
- Recording artist Olivia Lynn
Olivia just released her single “Modern Girl”, which ranks number 1 on the country iTunes charts, and she’ll be performing her track live at the conference.
