Bird keepers urged to prepare for winter Avian Flu threat

The Chief Veterinary Officers across the UK are encouraging all poultry keepers to take action now to reduce the risk of disease in their birds over the winter.

There are some simple measures that all poultry keepers, whether they are running a large commercial farm, keeping a few hens in their back garden, or rearing game birds, should take to protect their birds against the threat of avian influenza (bird flu) in the coming winter months.

Man receives life sentence for arson

A judge has said that householders were “lucky to get out alive” as he handed down a life sentence to a man found guilty of arson, after a series of fires were set in rural areas of Kempston earlier this year.

Bedfordshire Police appeal after girl suffers serious injuries in collision

The incident occurred in Bedford Road, Wootton, close to the junction with Potters Cross, just after 4pm 24 May 2019.

The girl was taken to Addenbrooke’s by air ambulance, where she remains in a critical condition.

Bedford Borough Council is joining the Great British Spring Clean by organising events to collect and safely dispose of litter, joining forces with Keep Britain Tidy to inspire 500,000 people across the country. This year, the Spring Clean will focus on single-use plastic and encourages everyone to recycle as much as possible.

At a Rookery South Community Energy Initiative (RSCEI) presentation to Cranfield Parish Council Councillor Robert Morris, ward councillor for Cranfield and Marston Moretaine, urged residents to sign up to the scheme.

He said:
“I strongly recommend that people apply for the scheme

“Because every penny that comes from this means that it’s a penny less that Covanta will have in their pockets.

“You are, technically, giving them a bloody nose by taking the money.”

Sounds Familiar Community Choir is looking for new members

Do you like singing for fun?
Following its post-Christmas break, the Sounds Familiar Community Choir will re-commence rehearsals on Tuesday, February 5th at 7.30p.m at Cranfield Baptist church.

The choir, which sings for fun and for charity, is looking out for new members, particularly of the male variety! No audition is needed. Being able to read music not essential either.

LibraryPlus scheme offers greater access to Wootton Library

LibraryPlus, Bedford Borough Council’s scheme to increase library usage, has gained over 7,500 members since its launch.

In September last year the Borough’s libraries started working in a whole new way. This included the start of self-service hours through LibraryPlus membership at Wootton Library.
