Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Adoption and Fostering Week, 4 – 10 March 2019

In response to LGBT Adoption and Fostering Week, Bedford Borough Council is holding two events on Wednesday 6 March 2019. Both take place at Borough Hall, Cauldwell Street, Bedford.

The first event is an informal lunch time drop-in session, from 11:00 until 14:00, to find out more about fostering or adoption. There is no need to book, interested people can just pop in.

The second is an adoption information evening from 18:15 until 20:30. This is for prospective adopters to come and hear more about the process of adoption, if they are considering it as something they would love to do.

Now in its eighth year, LGBT Adoption and Fostering Week is a national campaign encouraging more lesbian, gay, bi and trans people to consider these parenting routes.

The campaign is led by charity New Family Social and brings together adoption and foster care agencies from across the country.

Cllr Shan Hunt, Portfolio Holder for Children’s Social Care at Bedford Borough Council, said:

“We know from experience that LGBT people come to adoption and fostering with an open mind and real enthusiasm, as it’s often their first choice for growing their family. Some of our children have had a traumatic start to life, and we’ve seen them thrive with their new parents.

“You can be single, over 40 and you don’t need to own your own home to consider foster caring or adoption. We need people with stability, love and resourcefulness who can who can help a child with whatever needs they may have.”

Urgent need for more adopters and foster carers

There is an urgent need for more adopters and foster carers in the UK, with 6,800 new foster families needed and some 75,420 children in care in England alone in 2018.

More adopters and foster carers are needed to provide loving, stable homes for Bedford Borough children, particularly for those children over four years old and sibling groups.

If you are interested in becoming one of Bedford Borough’s foster carers or adopters, or to book onto an adoption information evening, get in touch with the team on 01234 718718 for more information.
