Driver clocked at 104mph in Bedfordshire 40mph zone
‘Lockdown speeding’ has become a very unwelcome by-product of the Government’s fight against coronavirus. So says the RAC, who sent a freedom of information (FOI) request to all British police forces.
The data found that 20 police forces caught their worst offenders travelling at speeds in excess of 100mph.
The worst speeder in the first three weeks of the lockdown was caught in West Yorkshire driving at 151mph on the M62 motorway – 81mph over the speed limit. This was 11mph faster than the next fastest recorded which was 140mph on the A14 in Suffolk.
Six forces – The Met, Northamptonshire, Gwent, Staffordshire, Kent and Humberside – all caught motorists driving at speeds in excess of 130mph.
The highest speed seen in a 40mph limit was 134mph on the A10 in North London. In Bedfordshire, the highest speed was in a 40mph limit, here the driver was clocked at 104mph on Airport Way in Luton.

Deaths and serious injuries top 1,100 on Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire roads
Over 1,100 people were killed or seriously injured on the roads of Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire between November 2018 and November 2019. This equates to almost 20 serious injuries and at least one death every week.
Between November 2018 and November 2019 in Bedfordshire there were 272 serious injuries on the counties roads, and 20 fatal incidents.
The shocking figures have been released by police at the start of this month’s speed campaign to remind motorists that speeding devastates lives.

Bedfordshire Police supports European speeding campaign
Targeting speeding drivers in support of a European campaign will be a focus for the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Road Policing Unit over the next two weeks.
Sergeant Ian Manley, of the BCH RPU, said: “We know speed is one of the main contributing factors of collisions in our counties and I would urge people to stick to the speed limits, which are there to keep us all safe.

The villages of Bromham, Clapham, Colmworth, Elstow and Willington are set to have average speed cameras installed, alongside Hillgrounds Road in Kempston and Mile Road in Bedford

Transport Secretary refuses to return a penny of speed camera fines to Bedford Borough
The Government has rejected a joint call from Mayor Dave Hodgson and a number of Parish Council Chairs to stop hoarding all of the fines raised by local average speed cameras and instead reinvest the cost of their installation in further road safety measures.
Bedford Borough Council became the first place in the in the country to install the cameras on local roads in 2012, after Mayor Dave recognised the breadth of public concern about speeding traffic. They are incredibly effective at bringing down speeds and hence have been popular where they have been installed, and a large waiting list of sites has grown as more communities have called for them.

Mayor Dave Hodgson announces further expansion of popular average speed camera programme
Mayor Dave Hodgson has announced another expansion of his popular programme to install average speed cameras where local communities have called for them.
The extension of the programme is in defiance of the government’s refusal to reinvest any of the fines generated to the local area, and instead to hoard the cash in Whitehall.

Vehicle speed figures from Cranfield traffic survey released
Central Bedfordshire Council audited two of the Cranfield’s vehicle activated signs
Between 14 November and 20 November 2018, Central Bedfordshire Council audited two of the vehicle activated signs in Cranfield. Until these surveys CBC hadn’t measured the traffic speed along these roads since 2011.
The automatic recordings found that ten vehicles passed the sign (in either direction) on Bedford Road at speeds of 60mph or over.

Police release Cranfield traffic survey results
Acting on residents’ concerns about vehicle speeds in Cranfield, Bedfordshire Police carried out two traffic surveys in the village.
One survey found that 7.8% of traffic passing along the High Street near to Red Lion Close was travelling at the minimum enforceable speed or above.
A spokesperson for Bedfordshire Police Traffic Management explained that the minimum enforceable speed is 10% + 2mph. This means that nearly eight percent of the traffic in this part of Cranfield was travelling at 35mph or above.

Cranfield residents are concerned about speeding traffic in the village. They should report these to Bedfordshire Police, who added a speed check survey after one resident spoke of their concerns.
