Bedford Borough Council said that firms across the Borough have stepped up in a wide variety of ways in support of the local and national effort to tackle coronavirus, protect the NHS and keep people safe.

Maths Circle wins Queen’s Award for Enterprise
Maths Circle Ltd is one of 220 organisations nationally to be recognised with a prestigious Queen’s Award for Enterprise. The Bedford-based company has been recognised for its excellence in innovation.
Innovation Award winners are defined as having demonstrated that their business has substantially improved in areas of performance and commercial success by either outstanding innovation, continued over at least two years, or continuous innovation and development over at least five years.
Maths Circle is the creator of “Times Tables Rock Stars”. Originally a paper based training aid, the gamified app uses artificial intelligence to tailors the questioning and learning to the child. Which means it can adapt to the child’s progress to increase their confidence and proficiency in maths.

The government has not included independently owned community news publishers like the Cranfield and Marston Vale Chronicle in its new COVID-19 campaign.

Bedford Borough Council: Over £10m given to support local businesses
Bedford Borough Council is administering the Government grant funding for certain businesses ratepayers affected by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
£10.12m has already landed in local businesses bank accounts.
But there are still businesses that haven’t registered.

Citizen Advice calls for further fixes to coronavirus safety net
Citizens Advice fears the government’s action to protect workers during the coronavirus pandemic could be undermined by confusion and patchy use of the job retention scheme by some employers.
The charity’s advisers are seeing cases of people at risk of slipping through the safety net, despite potentially being entitled to government support.
Citizens Advice research found around 6 million people in the UK (18% of the total workforce) have already seen their hours cut, been laid off or made redundant.

Funded by the Department of Health and Social Care and administered by Innovate UK, the project is a collaboration with Scottish companies Biotangents and IceRobotics.
The aim is to identify the disease brucellosis at an earlier stage.

Furloughed workers miss out on National Living Wage increase
The National Living Wage (NLW) increased on 1 April 2020 to £8.72, giving a pay rise to thousands of workers. The NLW is the statutory minimum wage for workers aged 25 and over.
The age threshold for the NLW will be reduced from 25 to 23 in 2021, and then further to 21 by 2024.
However, furloughed workers on NLW will not see this increase.

Over 300 Bedford Borough businesses have benefited from COVID-19 grants
By the end of March, Bedford Borough Council had approved 321 grants as part of the government’s £22 billion package to support eligible business affected by the coronavirus outbreak.
Across the country thousands of high street firms are beginning to receive £25,000 cash grants and will be exempt from business rates from today (Wednesday 1st April 2020).
As part of a raft measures announced by the Chancellor eligible properties, including those in the retail, hospitality and leisure sectors, will not pay business rates for the next 12 months.

COVID-19: Temporary changes to right to rent and right to work checks
Effective immediately, the temporary changes will mean the Home Office will not require landlords and employers to see original documents and will allow checks to be undertaken over video calls.
These temporary changes will mean that during the coronavirus outbreak prospective renters and workers are now able to submit scanned documents, rather than originals, to show they have a right to rent or right to work.
